... was born on April 18, 1955, in Düren. He studied law at the University of Bonn where he was awarded a doctorate. He began his career in 1982 in the legal department of Otto Wolff AG in Cologne.
In 1990, he moved to Thyssen Industrie AG, where he was in charge of legal affairs for large-scale plant business. Three years later, Dr. Atzpodien headed Project Management and Project Controlling at Thyssen Still Otto Anlagentechnik GmbH in Bochum, a company belonging to Thyssen Industrie. In 1994, he was appointed by Thyssen Industrie General Manager of Magnetschnellbahn-Planungsgesellschaft mbH, with headquarters in Schwerin, which had been established for the preparatory planning of the Berlin-Hamburg Transrapid project. In October 1997, he first became a member of the Management Board and, as of July 1998, parallel to this, spokesman for the Management Board of Thyssen Transrapid System GmbH (now ThyssenKrupp Transrapid GmbH) in Kassel.
He was appointed to the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Ingenieurbau in July 2000.
Dr. Atzpodien has been an Executive Board member of ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG since October 1, 2001 and additionaly has been appointed to the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as Chief Executive Officer since March 15, 2007.
