... was born on September 20, 1962, in Berlin. After senior high graduation, he studied Business Management at the Technical University of Berlin. In 1992, he was awarded a doctorate by the Technical University of Berlin.
From 1984 to 1988, Dr. Berlien managed the family business. Subsequently, he worked for IBM Deutschland GmbH in Berlin and Mainz. Following sojourns as a trainee in Controlling and in charge of Performance Measurement, and as a product controller for magnetic head manufacture, he became product controller for all of the Berlin plants products in 1991. This was followed in 1992 by his appointment as the head of Plans & Controls of IBM Deutschland Entwicklung GmbH in Stuttgart/Berlin. In 1993, he moved to Buderus Heiztechnik GmbH in Wetzlar as the head of Controlling and CFO. In 1994, he was additionally appointed CFO of Buderus Ungarn Kft. In Budapest. In 1996, Dr. Berlien became head of the Industrial Metrology division at Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen, Chairman of the Management Board of Carl Zeiss Industrielle Messtechnik GmbH, Oberkochen, and President of the CZ IMT Corporation in Minneapolis, MN, USA. From 1999 to March 2002, as Executive Board member at Carl Zeiss, he was in charge of Finance and Controlling, IT, Human Resources, International Sales, and the Industrial Metrology division.
Since April 2002, Dr. Berlien has been a member of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG and, since February 2004, also Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG.
