GROWTH IN OIL TOOLS
Special tools - in demand worldwide

Specialists | Jörn Grotherr, Daniel Runge, Matthias Theiss, Jens Lutzhöft, Denns Landt (from right) from Oil Tools with a new oil production component.

Demand for oil remains high, providing rich pickings for suppliers of products used in oil production, such as the Oil Tools business unit of Blohm + Voss Repair.

Specializing in the design and production of special tools for handling drill pipes, the Oil Tools business unit of Blohm + Voss Repair is the only enterprise of its kind in Germany and number 2 in the world. For over three decades it has been supplying drilling stations on land and offshore with clamps and fixing devices. Used for connecting, lifting and lowering drill pipes, these components have to be extremely strong. “In the rough prevailing conditions they are subject to enormous loads,” says Jörn Grotherr, senior design engineer at Oil Tools. “So we need tools that are strong, reliable and easy to use.”

Complete portfolio
As well as lifting loads of up to 1,400 tons, the tools also have to be extremely sensitive, because despite its size and weight, a drill pipe has relatively thin walls and therefore requires careful handling. "We have to meet high standards in order to compete,” says Jens Lutzhöft, head of the Oil Tools business. "By establishing ourselves as a supplier of high quality we have built up a good position.”

Strong increases in both order intake and sales have been reported in recent times. Lutzhöft: “As long as demand for oil remains strong, we expect our business to show stable growth rates.” The aim is to maintain the current market position and increase the lead on the world’s number three. Oil Tools has an extensive portfolio: Alongside a wide range of individual products we can also supply various system solutions. Added to this are customized niche products. “This means that unlike some of our competitors we can meet our customers’ specific requirements,” says Lutzhöft.

Young and international
The equipment is used throughout the world, key markets being North America, the Middle East and the Far East. Design, assembly and quality testing are carried out exclusively in Germany. Most of the production work also takes place here. Some work is also carried out in cooperation with partners. “For example we recently began producing a new hydraulic arm for a product made by a US partner,” says Grotherr.

New developments will continue to be added in the future. One of the aims is to be able to supply an increased level of complete product packages for major projects with a volume of up to three million US dollars. Work is also being carried out on the use of new materials and modified designs aimed at saving material and reducing weight. A further important area is services. Lutzhöft: “Customers require additional services, so we are increasingly investing in this area.” Oil Tools currently employs 130 people. The head of the business unit is confident his young, international team has a bright future.
